What “link in bio” actually means

“Link in bio” means: the thing I am talking about is not clickable here, so go to my profile and tap the link there instead. It is a workaround for a rule almost every social platform shares — captions and comments cannot contain working links, but a profile can.

The short answer

A link in bio is the single clickable web address shown on a social media profile, directly underneath the bio text. When someone writes “link in bio” in a caption, they are telling you the page they mentioned — a shop, an article, a new song, a booking form — is reachable from that link on their profile, because they could not make the caption itself clickable.

The phrase is most associated with Instagram, which has had the rule the longest, but it is used on TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Threads for the same reason.

Why people say it instead of just posting the link

Not politeness, and not habit. On Instagram, text typed into a caption or a comment is rendered as plain text — you can read a URL there but you cannot tap it, and copying it by hand is enough friction that almost nobody does. The profile is the one place on the account where a link is actually clickable.

Platforms do this deliberately. Links in captions would make spam trivial at enormous scale, and every link that leaves the app is a person who stops scrolling. Restricting links to the profile keeps both problems small.

The side effect is that an account gets one link for everything it will ever promote. A post from March and a post from October both point at the same slot, and that slot can only hold one address at a time.

How to find someone's link in bio

It is on their profile, not on the post you were looking at — which is the part that trips people up. On Instagram:

  1. Open their profile. Tap their username or profile picture at the top of the post. A link in bio is never on the post itself — it lives on the profile.
  2. Look directly under the bio text. On the profile, find the short description under their name. Any link appears immediately below it, usually in a different colour to the surrounding text.
  3. Tap the link. Tapping opens it in Instagram's in-app browser. To open it in your normal browser instead, use the menu in the corner and choose to open externally.
  4. Pick what you came for. If it opens a page of several buttons rather than going straight somewhere, that is a link-in-bio page. Choose the item the caption mentioned.

The steps are the same on TikTok and Threads: open the profile, look under the bio text, tap the link. On a computer the link sits in the same place, under the bio on the profile page, and opens in a new tab.

When there is no link there at all

If you have checked the profile and there is nothing under the bio, one of a few ordinary things is true.

  • They removed it, or swapped it for a newer one — the slot holds a single address, so an older post's “link in bio” often points at something that has since been replaced
  • They never added one, and the caption was copied from a template
  • The link is in their Stories or a pinned highlight instead, which is common for time-limited things
  • You are looking at a post page rather than the profile — tap their username at the top of the post first
  • The account is private and you do not follow it, so the profile is hidden

There is no way to see a link that has been changed or removed. If the post is recent and the link is gone, asking in a comment is usually faster than hunting.

How one link became a page of links

Because the slot holds exactly one address, anyone with more than one thing to promote has the same problem: swap the link every time, and every older post now points somewhere wrong.

The common fix is to put one permanent address in that slot — a small page that holds all the destinations at once. The profile link never changes again; you edit the page behind it instead. That page is what a link-in-bio tool makes, and it is why the phrase now names a whole category of product rather than just a sentence in a caption.

It is worth saying that you do not strictly need a tool. Any URL works in that slot, so your own website, a Notion page or a Google Doc are all valid answers. Tools exist because a page that is built for thumbs, loads instantly on mobile data and takes two minutes to update is meaningfully better than a document.

Making your own

A link-in-bio page gives you one short address to paste into the slot, and a list of buttons behind it that you can reorder, rename and replace whenever you like. You put the address in your profile once and never touch it again.

Miine is a free way to make one. There is a single tier, so every design control — fonts, colours, button shape, backgrounds, gradients, stickers — is available from the start, and published pages carry a small “Miine” link in the corner.

Questions

What does “link in bio” mean?

It means the link being referred to is on the person's profile rather than in the post. Captions on Instagram and TikTok cannot contain clickable links, so creators put one clickable link on their profile — under the bio text — and point to it from captions with the phrase “link in bio”.

Where is the link in bio on Instagram?

On the person's profile, directly underneath their bio text and above their posts grid. Tap their username at the top of a post to reach the profile first — the link is never shown on the post itself. It is in the same place on desktop.

How do I check if someone has a link in their bio?

Open their profile and look just below the bio description. If there is a link it appears there in a contrasting colour, usually showing the site name. If that area only shows plain text, they have not set one.

Why can't I find the link in bio?

Usually because the creator has since replaced or removed it — the profile holds only one link at a time, so older posts often point at a link that has changed. It may also be in their Stories or highlights instead, or the account may be private.

Can you put a clickable link in an Instagram caption?

No. Links typed into captions and comments render as plain text and cannot be tapped. The profile link is the only clickable link a standard account gets, which is the entire reason the phrase “link in bio” exists.

How many links can you have in an Instagram bio?

Instagram allows a small number of links on the profile, but the common approach is to use one permanent address pointing to a link-in-bio page that holds everything. That way the profile never has to be edited again — you change the page behind it instead.

Do I need a tool to have a link in bio?

No. Any working URL can go in that slot, including your own website or a Notion page. A dedicated tool is worth it when you have several destinations, because it gives you one address that never changes and a mobile page that loads quickly.

Is a link in bio free?

Adding a link to your profile is free on every platform. Tools that build the page behind it vary — most have a free tier with paid upgrades. Miine is free with a single tier and no paid plan.

It takes about two minutes.
